Machine Learning in X-ray Diagnosis for Oral Health: A Review of Recent Progress

The past few decades have witnessed remarkable progress in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) medicine, notably medical imaging. ML to dental oral imaging has also been developed, powered by availability clinical images. present work aims investigate recent concerning diagnosis diseases using X-ray imaging, namely quality outcome such methods. specific research question was developed PICOT methodology. review conducted Web Science, Science Direct, IEEE Xplore databases, for articles reporting use AI diagnostic purposes X-ray-based Imaging types included panoramic, periapical, bitewing images, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). search limited papers published English language from 2018 2022. initial 104 that were assessed eligibility. Of these, 22 a final appraisal. full text carefully analyzed relevant data as application, models, metrics used assess their performance, characteristics datasets, registered further analysis. paper discusses opportunities, challenges, limitations found.
